The Elgin Symphony Orchestra’s early February performances, led by guest conductor Alastair Willis, promise a tantalizing musical travelogue.
The program opens with “Tangazo,” a passionate piece from composer Astor Piazzolla whose music fuses tango and jazz, and depicts life in Buenos Aires. One of the world’s foremost harpists, Yolanda Kondonassis, performs Ginastera’s Concerto for Harp. The program concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (“Pastoral”), capturing his emotions on trips into the Viennese countryside.
Telarc just released “Air,” its 15th major album release by Kondonassis, featuring the parallel works of Claude Debussy and Toru Takemitsu.
Performances begin at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, in Schaumburg’s Prairie Center for the Arts; and 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, both in The Hemmens Theatre in downtown Elgin.
