Scholarships

• Emily Schwender of St. Charles has been awarded the Alumni Scholarship to attend Aurora Central Catholic High School for the 2008-2009 school year. This is a four-year renewable scholarship based on her score on the January placement exam. Schwender is a graduate of St. Patrick Catholic Grade School, St. Charles.

• John Donnelly of Geneva has received the Maurice L. Regole Jr. ‘52 Memorial Scholarship to Marmion’s class of 2012, based on his performance on the scholarship qualifying entrance exam last December and his academic achievements. He is the son of Tom and Joan Donnelly of Geneva and attends Geneva Middle School South in Geneva.

• Christian Fitzsimmons received the Rev. Alcuin Deck OSB Memorial Alumni Association Scholarship to Marmion’s class of 2012 based on his performance on the scholarship qualifying entrance exam last December and his academic achievements. He attends St. Patrick’s Catholic School in St. Charles and is the son of Robert and Sheila Fitzsimmons of Geneva. Fitzsimmons’ father, brother and uncles are Marmion graduates.

• Joseph Glemkowski received the Edwin and Laurina Witting Memorial Honor Scholarship to Marmion’s class of 2012 based on his performance on the scholarship qualifying entrance exam last December and his academic achievements. He is the son of James and Deborah Glemkowski of Batavia and attends Geneva Middle School North in Geneva.

Achievements

• Marmion Academy’s Math Team finished in seventh place overall in Division 2A at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics state math contest on April 26. The Oral Presentation Team of Jeffrey Gerold of St. Charles and Eric Schwendner of St. Charles placed fourth. The PreCalculus Team of Thomas Hymel of Batavia, Rich Peck of St. Charles, CJ Heuman of Aurora, David Iozzo of Batavia, Bill Simon of LaGrange and Henry Carlson of Batavia placed fifth. The Freshmen-Sophomore Eight-Man Team finished sixth. The team is led by Sanjay Prakadan of Aurora, and includes Jeff McLean of Batavia, Mitchell Hymel of Batavia, Joe Burroughs of Elburn, Trevor Boone of Geneva, Matt Frost of Naperville, Spencer Buyansky of Yorkville and Michael Conway of Naperville. The Calculator Team, led by David Iozzo of Batavia, and including Tom Hymel of Batavia, Nathan McGinn of DeKalb, Paul Reyna of Aurora and Bennett Marsh of Batavia, finished eighth.

• The Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra has given the Robert Hanson Award to Terri Goh of St. Charles. The award is given to a single member of the orchestra who has demonstrated integrity, hard work, superior musical ability, commitment to music and contributions to the orchestra’s programs.

• Nora Leavy of St. Charles and Kathy McNally of Geneva have been selected to participate in the “Batavia Art in Your Eye” juried show. The show is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 9 and 10 on the Riverwalk in Batavia. The students attend Rosary High School.

• Kathy McNally of Geneva was accepted into the Maryland Institute of Creative Arts. She was also awarded $36,000 in scholarships.

• Southern Illinois University Carbondale announced the fall semester 2007 Dean’s Lists. Dean’s List recognition goes to students who compile grade-point averages that meet or exceed performance standards set by the university’s schools and colleges. The minimum standards vary by college and range from 3.25 to 3.75 on a scale of 4.0. Students from Batavia are Dana Garrison, Ryan Rendleman, Anna Ricker, Daniel Siedal. Students from St. Charles are Michael Burch, Nadyna Galan, Susan Secor, Summer Hallaj, Cory Petermann, Sandy Rosencrans, Kyle Soerens, Ryan Wilkinson. The student from Geneva is Aaron Jun.

• Pamela Miller of St. Charles has been chosen to serve as a resident assistant during the 2008-2009 academic year at Millikin University. Resident assistants are student staff members who live and work within residence halls at Millikin. Miller is a theater major and a graduate of St. Charles North High School.  

• Aimee Martin was inducted into the Rho Kappa Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Elgin Community College on March 13. Martin, majoring in nursing, is the daughter of William and Patricia Ashbaugh and Robert Martin of St. Charles. Established in 1918 by two-year college presidents, Phi Theta Kappa is the oldest honor society serving two-year colleges around the world. The society serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership and service programming.
