BATAVIA, IL -

H.C. Storm Elementary School in Batavia will participate for the third consecutive year in the International Walk to School Day, planned for Monday, Oct. 1.

The week-long event is designed to allow parents and school staff to teach children about pedestrian safety and to emphasize the health benefits of walking to school.

Local municipal officials, fire and police, aldermen and the Batavia Public School District 101 superintendent have been invited to select a morning to meet the walkers/cyclists as they arrive at H.C. Storm, 305 N. VanNortwick Ave., said Cynthia Sikorski, school principal.

“Last year, we had an incredible turnout of walkers and cyclists all in an effort to promote a healthy lifestyle to the children of H.C. Storm,” said Sikorski, who organized the event with the school’s parent-teacher organization. “We’re hoping that beyond this event we are able to encourage families to consider walking or bicycling to school one day a week to keep the campaign going throughout the entire school year.”

H.C. Storm School’s event will take place each morning between 8:45 and 9 a.m., which is when the school day officially starts. The school day ends at 3:30 p.m. The school has 461 students and those who take part in the event each day will receive a foot charm and those who utilize private or public buses will be given the opportunity to walk during recess to earn the charm.
