OUTLOOK
So far so good for the Storm. With just one major loss from last year’s team (breaststroker Rachel Musnicki), South Elgin is cruising through the season with a 4-0 dual meet record as of Wednesday.
“The season is going well,” coach Kubek said. “The girls have been maintaining times throughout the meets, but I would like to see the times dropping in our meets coming up.”
In the world of swimming, when fractions of a second can mean the difference between elation or depression, trimming time as the season progresses toward the postseason is key. The Storm will once again swim at the very competitive St. Charles North sectional, where it believes it can improve on last year’s sixth-place finish.
“I think that we are stronger as a team this year,” Kubek said. “We have really worked hard to have the team support each other and push to achieve the wins we have had this year. The girls have been working. I am looking forward to conference and sectionals to see how the girls have progressed.
“I think that we can improve our times before conference and sectionals. The girls will need to push themselves hard to achieve these goals. I believe in their talent and ability, they just need to believe it themselves.
Greene, who finished 22nd in the state in the diving competition, is back again this season and is bolstered by a slew of swimmers (Erath, Moore, Rueger and Trenn) who return with a year of experience under their belts. All that could add up to South Elgin’s most successful season yet.
“We would like to place higher in conference and sectionals this year, and send Taylor Greene back to state for diving and have some swimmers join her,” Kubek said. “I think that our goals are attainable as long as we work to achieve them.”

Improvement throughout the season is the name of the game in swimming, and the Hawks have improved steadily from the beginning of the season through to the midpoint of the season.
“The season has been going great thus far,” coach Kalush said. “The girls are improving their times and swimming their best times, which always our goal.”
Stephanie Hasenberg (a state qualifier in the 500-yard freestyle) and Traci Reiner have been lost to graduation, leaving a young team where three sophomores and four freshmen are part of the rotation.
Freshman Lottermoser has had good showings in the 200 individual medley, while returning sophomores Popovich, Olsen and Schmitz have swum well, especially in relay races.
But the success of the season will come down to the Hawks’ showings in the St. Charles North sectional meet in November. From now until then trimming times and finding the best races for each swimmer will be the focus.
“The girls still have a long road ahead of them,” Kalush said. “We have a full month of practices left and a few dual meets that we’ll use to seed girls for conference and sectionals. With hard work and determination the girls can all swim best times.”
