The village of Bartlett has begun making modifications to the traffic lights surrounding the train station downtown.
All of the traffic lights near the train station in downtown Bartlett are interconnected, according to
Public Works Director Paul Kuester. Although some modifications to streamline the lights have been made, the village still is waiting to find out costs from Meade Electric to made additional infrastructure modifications.
“The goal is to get timing down to make the cycles shorter,” Kuester said. “So people don’t have to sit there that long.”
A potential contract from Meade Electric will allow for the relocation of vehicle sensors.
At Bartlett’s Oct. 20 board meeting, Village Administrator Valerie Salmons said the sensor modifications will have a significant impact on traffic.
The village said improvements made so far have already reduced traffic.
“I’ve heard positive feedback from a few people,” Kuester said. “The modifications are moving vehicles quicker through there, especially on non-peak times.”
Lynne Schiller has lived in Bartlett for 31 years and said she tries to avoid downtown area when possible because of the traffic.
“Traffic is moving a little more smoothly,” said Schiller, who drives through the area a few times a month. “There used to be a lot of back-ups.”
She still uses Devon Avenue to avoid the congested area, but said she would drive through downtown more often if further changes were made.
Kuester said he hopes to have the project completed this fall before winter weather hits.
