For people without health insurance, getting sick or needing an exam is a justified fear.
To help appease those concerns, Hanover Township’s Office of Community Health will host Saturday its third annual wellness expo, Just for the Health of It. Office of Community Health Director Trish Simon said the expo will offer people free screenings including those for diabetes, cholesterol, anemia, osteoporosis, kidneys and dental health.
“This is an opportunity for people to take an active approach to their health, to see what resources are out there and to walk away with some answers,” Simon said.
The event also will include more than 100 vendors, flu vaccines for affordable rates, and a family fun tent with a moon jump for kids. Co-hosting the event, the Victory Centre of Bartlett will offer a LifeSource blood drive on its campus.
Simon said nearly 800 people attended the event last year.
“We’re hoping to exceed last year’s number with so many people losing their jobs and their insurance,” she said. “We just really wanted to coordinate with local agencies and get the word out with the different things the township offers.”
Victory Centre Sales Manager Starr Komacki said her group has worked with Hanover Township on this event since it debuted in 2007 and the money raised at the event benefits a township crisis fund.
“We thought it was a great cause and wanted to participate,” she said.
Simon and Komacki encourage residents to attend to take advantage of the opportunity and take control of their health.
“It meets a lot of needs,” Komacki said. “It’s really hooking up residents in a community network so you know your resources.”
