Hanover Township seniors are getting ready for their close-up as they prepare to put on their 4th-annual variety show Jan. 7.
Tracey Colagrossi, the township’s Senior Services program manager, said a group of about 40 seniors are participating in this year’s performance, which is titled “A Classic Vegas New Year,” and will parody talent such as “The Carol Burnett Show” and “The Ed Sullivan Show.”
“The seniors helped write and choreograph most of the musical numbers we parodied this year,” she said. “The inspiration is things they can relate to.”
Four seniors helped pen this year’s show, including Jan Klee, Bea Golub, Alfred Papiewski and Patricia Loomis. Klee, who said she’s been involved in show business for years, said the experience of pulling together the production together has made her feel “worthwhile.”
“We laugh, we sing and we have such a good time,” she said.
Klee said the seniors have been rehearsing since August for the show, which takes place 45 minutes before the ball drops on New Years Eve on a Las Vegas-themed stage.
“It will be very funny,” Klee said. “There will be seniors acting badly and having a good time.”
The performance will take place at the Performing Arts Center at Elgin Community College for the first time. Past performances have been held at the Seville in Streamwood and St. Charles’ Pheasant Run, but outgrew those venues because of the show’s increasing popularity, Colagrossi said.
As an added incentive, Klee said there will be transportation for those who make advance arrangements with Hanover Township to bus people to and from the senior center, as well as a shuttle service from the parking lot to the theater’s entrance.
Additionally, complimentary hot and cold hors d’oeuvers will immediately follow the performance, which Klee hopes will entice people to trek out to the show in the winter weather.
“We may get older, but we don’t get old,” she said. “We keep everything fresh by making it a really good time.”
