School District U-46’s Board of Education unanimously approved a tight but balanced budget for 2010-11 during its regular meeting Monday. 9/27
The board has been discussing the budget since the spring and moved to approve it Monday with relatively little discussion on the matter.
“It’s going to look like we just kind of passed over this huge item, but we’ve really been dealing with the budget since April,” School Board President Ken Kaczynski said. “It’s been heavily scrutinized, so you can rest assured it’s been given the attention it deserves.”
District financial analyst Dale Burnridge said monitoring the budget throughout the year has allowed U-46 to stay on track financially.
“By doing the amended budget this year and making adjustments in the middle of the year, we were able to keep our expenses down close to our revenues,” he said.
Burnridge said while operating funds have a more than $1 million deficit, so far U-46 is on track with receiving property tax receipts from both Kane and DuPage counties, which brought in $37.6 million Sept. 16.
The district’s current cash balance is about $84 million, Burnridge said.
“We are getting our money,” he said. “There’s still $10 million Cook County has to pay us for fiscal year 2010.”
According to Burnridge, it’s projected the district won’t receive the rest of the funds from Cook County until late November or early December.
But with such a restricted budget to work with, Kaczynski said the district needs to work hard to keep it stable.
“(The budget) provides not a lot of room for a lot of errors and demands that our employees work very hard to achieve some of the things that we need to achieve,” Kaczynski said.
