1 Time to tailgate
The main celebration for National Night Out, a nationwide crime and drug prevention initiative, will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday 8/3 during Picnic in the Park, but Bartlett is leading up to the event with a weekend of activities for families. The fun starts with a family tailgate tonight 7/30. The Bartlett Police Department will be serving a limited amount of free hot dogs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Jim Jensen Pavilion. According to Sgt. Geoff Pretkelis, there will be music and games, and the Bartlett Home Depot will help children build kites.
2 Brighten up with a pool party
After the tailgate, police will lead a flashlight walk tonight 7/30 from the pavilion to the Bartlett Aquatic Center for a pool party. The movie “Surf’s Up” will be shown and free root beer floats will be available, Pretkelis said. Those who take part in the walk will receive free admission to the party. Participants should bring their own flashlights, and the Bartlett Fire Protection District will be handing out free glow sticks.
3 Party your block out
National Night Out promotes year-round community improvement efforts such as neighborhood watch programs. Bartlett encourages neighbors to host block parties from 3 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, July 31. Residents had the opportunity to register their blocks, and Pretkelis said about 16 neighborhood blocks were registered as of Wednesday. Block parties will be judged in categories including best overall, best participation, best theme and best National Night Out spirit by members of the Fire Protection District and Police Department.
4 Turn on the lights
During Saturday’s neighborhood block parties, residents also have the opportunity to decorate their homes with lights to support National Night Out objectives. “Different neighborhoods do different things,” Pretkelis said. “We’ve seen everything from tiki torches to Christmas lights to turning on porch lights.” Of the 16 neighborhoods registered earlier this week, nine are participating in the lighting competition. The Police Department and Fire District also will be judging which neighborhood has the best lights. Winners of all categories will be announced Tuesday night at the Picnic in the Park.
5 What the residents said
Police expect thousands of residents from the Bartlett area to participate in National Night Out events. While Bartlett resident Jaime Hanrahan won’t be participating in the lighting competition, she said she believes in the program and thinks it’s a good time to get together with neighbors during the summer. “It opens an opportunity to talk to your kids about drugs and violence,” Hanrahan said. Bartlett resident Ernest Evans’ street is participating in this weekend’s block parties, and he said he enjoys the community events. “I think it’s important to participate at some level to support it,” Evans said.
