A chance like this only comes around once in a Little Leaguer’s career.
Spectators can view the Little League State All-Star Tournament being played at Glen A. Koehler Memorial Fields through Monday night. If missed, the next opportunity won’t be for another 18 years.
Bartlett Little League, which is a part of a conglomerate of local teams in District 13, won the bid to host this year’s tournament. Though no local teams advanced to the tournament, Bartlett anticipates 500 spectators will turn out for the event, said Brenda Marasa, tournament director.
“It’s quite an honor for the community to sponsor something like this,” she said. “It gives us the opportunity to showcase the town.”
The Bartlett Chamber of Commerce put together welcome packets for the teams and spectators, hoping fans will patronize local businesses.
Paula Schumacher, assistant village administrator, has worked closely with Bartlett’s Little League, securing the tournament, providing history about the fields and ensuring enough police to manage traffic. Planning began a year ago.
“I imagine Hitting Zone and local restaurants will be busy after some of the folks finish up,” she said.
The winning team will advance to regionals in Indiana and possibly to the Little League World Series in Pennsylvania. The Little League World Series, which runs from Aug. 14 to 24, will be aired on national radio and ESPN.
Though she is disappointed no local teams qualified for the tournament this year, Marasa encourages spectators to stop by.
“The community should witness quality baseball you don’t get to see very often,” she said. “It’s really going to be a great moment in time.”
