Police are still searching for the man they say robbed Hometown Pantry in Bloomingdale Monday afternoon with an ax.
Bloomingdale Watch Commander Randy Sater said at 3 p.m. a man entered the convenience store at 360 W. Schick Road wearing dark clothing, a white baseball hat and a white bandanna over his face. Carrying a hatchet in his right hand, the offender demanded about $500 from the store clerk, police said.
The clerk and the offender talked briefly about why he was robbing the store, before the robber fled through a back entrance, Sater said. The clerk chased the man, ran southwest for about a block, and last saw him in Bloomfield Club, on the 200 block of Bloomfield Parkway, Sater said.
Bloomingdale Police and a Villa Park canine officer reported to the scene of the robbery.
Sater said the man was last seen carrying a hatchet, may be dangerous and has not yet been located.
Bloomingdale School District 13 was locked down Monday afternoon as officers attempted to apprehend the alleged robber. Based on police advice, the district postponed dismissing students who live west of Bloomingdale Road and south of Lake Street until around 5 p.m. Monday.
The district had returned to normal operation by Tuesday morning, according to police.
