• Central DuPage Hospital’s Auxiliary recently awarded $35,000 in scholarships to 18 local high school, college and medical students interested in pursuing a career in health care. Scholarships were awarded to students attending a college, university, graduate or medical school program in fall 2008. Applicants were required to document academic excellence, be pursuing a career in health care and live within Central DuPage Hospital’s service area.
The following area high school graduates were awarded scholarships: Rythm Gandhi of Carol Stream, Kelsey Gossen of West Chicago, Krishna Patel of Glendale Heights, Christina Rojas of Wheaton and Vivian Yang of Glen Ellyn. The following area college students were awarded scholarships: Nishant Goyal, Stacy Pacana and Cassandra Rico, all of Naperville; Jessica Remke, Esther Kim, Joshua Williams and David Ryan, all of Wheaton; Michelle Koch and Valerie Lambrecht, both of Winfield; Jennifer Heise of Batavia; Jason Carroll of St. Charles; Megan Mazur of Roselle; and Justine Rehak of Carol Stream.

• The DuPage Amateur Radio Club will operate in a 24-hour national event called Field Day, allowing amateur radio operators an opportunity to practice communications under simulated emergency conditions, beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 28, and Sunday, June 29, at Hawthorne Hill, 22W221 71st St., Woodridge. • There still are several slots open for the Au Sable youth camp that will be held from Sunday, July 20, through Friday, July 25. The co-ed camp presents an opportunity for kids to be introduced to the life of fly-fishing in a very unique setting. Camp will begin with a tour of the watershed led by Professor Mike Wiley, head of the Department of National Resources, who will emphasize the geology that makes the Au Sable watershed such a special ecological treasure. The campers will have an opportunity to see the richness of the fishery by participating in electro-shocking and placing a woody structure to improve habitat of the fishery. • Elmhurst will celebrate the nation’s independence with the annual Fourth of July Parade and Ice Cream Social from 9:30 a.m. to noon Friday, July 4. The festive event features free Scoops ice cream and lemonade, a children’s rocket balloon craft and entertainment from the Elmhurst College Jazz Band on the lawn of the Glos Mansion at the Elmhurst Historical Museum, 120 E. Park Ave. This event is co-sponsored by Elmhurst Historical Museum, Elmhurst Park District and Suburban Bank and Trust of Elmhurst.
Inside the museum, visitors can tour this summer’s exhibit, “Brain Teasers 2,” the brain-bending traveling exhibit from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry that features puzzles of all kinds to test creativity and problem-solving skills. • The Catholic Alumni Club of Chicago will meet at 12:30 p.m. Friday, July 4, at the La Grange Metro Train Station at La Grange Road and Burlington Avenue to head to Ribfest in Naperville. There is a parking lot west of the train station on Burlington. Participants will either carpool from there or catch the 12:55 p.m. Metra, which leaves from the north side of the tracks and arrives in Naperville at 1:29 p.m. The club will meet at Barnes and Noble at Washington Street and Chicago Avenue in Naperville between 1:45 and 2:15 p.m. to meet up with participants who plan to connect with the group in Naperville.
