
Accomplishments
• Senior Pete Cappetta from Lisle, a high honor roll student at Montini Catholic, has been nominated for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award for his outstanding performance in the classroom and on the sporting field. Cappetta is the treasurer of the National Honor Society. In the baseball off season, Cappetta acts as captain of both the basketball team and the football team. Last summer, Cappetta volunteered to work with the children at the DuPage Easter Seals.
• Kari Chesney, a Woodridge resident and senior at Downers Grove South High School has been awarded a Presidential Scholarship, to attend North Central College, Naperville. The Presidential Scholarship is North Central’s most prestigious merit-based award.
• Natalia Kecala of Lemont was among 79 students at Fenwick High School have been named 2006 State Scholars by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. The State Scholar program recognizes Illinois high school students for outstanding academic achievement.
• Gwendolyn Meldrum of Bolingbrook has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. The society recognizes the top scholars in the nation and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence.
• Cadet Evan Holmes, a junior at Howe Military School in Indiana, was named to the Headmaster’s List for the fourth six-week grading period of the 2006-07 school year. Holmes, a Darien resident, received this special award by attaining at least a 3.0 B average in his studies in a college prep curriculum.
• The National Society of High School Scholars has announced that Mount Assisi Academy student Danielle Dement of Lemont has been selected for membership. The society recognizes the top scholars in the nation and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence.
• Victoria House of Westmont, a junior at Nazareth Academy, La Grange Park, has been selected to participate in the National Student Leadership Conference State Leadership Workshop - Illinois during the summer at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
• Valparaiso University student Erin Votava of Naperville is one of several social work majors who are helping out the community through their internships. She is an intern at Kyle Elementary School in Portage, Ind. She is also helping to improve self-esteem and team work among students as well as working with other behavioral problems such as anger management.
• Woodridge resident Jennifer Barnes won the Illinois Community College of Trustee Association’s Student Essay Contest at College of DuPage. She earned a $100 award and entry into the state competition through ICCTA. Her essay was “What College of DuPage Means to Me.”
• Deanna Jourdan of Woodridge won second place in the Illinois Community College Trustees Association Student Essay Contest at College of DuPage. She wrote on the theme topic, “How My Community College Has Changed My Life.”
• Kathryn R. Braun, a Naperville resident and senior at Naperville Central High School was awarded the Arlo Schilling Presidential Scholarship to attend North Central College, Naperville.
• Jenna Jungels, a senior at J. Sterling Morton High School West, Berwyn, was awarded a Presidential Scholarship to attend North Central College.
• Nearly two dozen College of DuPage honors students were among the 60 presenters at the Honors Council of the Illinois Region Annual Spring Student Conference at North Central College, Naperville.

Scholarships available
• Rich Duran, Will County regional superintendent of schools, has applications available for the Julie A. and Lloyd Lehman Journalism Scholarship. The scholarship is offered by the Suburban Cook County Regional Office of Education in honor of the late Dr. Lloyd Lehman and his wife, Julie. This year’s Lehman Scholarship will award three $2,900 scholarships to graduating seniors in Illinois who plan to study journalism in college.
