Something’s fishy on Friday nights

Bartlett, IL -

Fish fry season is here! The 40 days of Lent provide good eating for fish lovers.

I have two favorite local “see-and-be-seen” fish fry locations. Both are friendly venues. You might share a table with old friends and neighbors or meet new ones.

The first location is Roselle’s American Legion Post 1084, 344 E. Maple. The Sons of the American Legion host an all-you-can-eat Friday fish fry of cod, halibut, soup, salad, veggies, cole slaw, French fries and dessert from 6 to 8 p.m. on Fridays.

After eating, the Johnnie Matt Trio provides great dance music. The cost of dinner and entertainment is just $10 for adults; $5 for children ages six to 12; children under 5 can attend for free.

Better yet, this fish fry provides a chance to chat with Roselle Mayor Gayle Smolinski and her husband, Don Smolinski, George and Mary Beth Eiermann, Bill and Kathy Dombrowski, and Kathie Fitzpatrick.

For more information, call (630) 894-8524.

My other beloved fish fry location is the Bloomingdale Golf Course, 181 Glen Ellyn Road. Since the golf club is owned by the village, this fish fry supports the community.
Regulars at this Friday night place-to-be include Bloomingdale Mayor Bob Iden, his wife Jo Ellen, and village trustees Jim King and John Dabrowski. From 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., they will enjoy a meal of all-you-can-eat haddock or shrimp. The cost is $12.95 for adults; $6.95 for children under 13.

Dreams do come true

Rylee Haffey of Medinah is living proof.

Rylee, a first-grader at Medinah Christian School, memorized a poem for the school speech contest and won the opportunity to represent her class in the inter-school speech meet this Friday at the school.

The poem that Rylee memorized was about a dog. The topic is somewhat unfamiliar to Rylee, since she doesn’t have a dog.

That was until someone offered her uncle — Bob Marks of Bartlett — a six-week-old black Labrador retriever. Marks didn’t want the puppy, but he knew a 6-year-old who had memorized a poem about one.

“I named my puppy Bubba,” said Rylee. “He’s my new best friend.”

Best of luck to you in the speech meet, Rylee.

A meeting with Mary Ellen

Mary Ellen Woods of Bloomingdale has scheduled a meeting from 7 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Lake Park High School’s West Campus, 500 W. Bryn Mawr, Roselle.
Everyone’s invited.

Woods is the co-chair of this year’s Bloomingdale, Itasca, Roselle Relay for Life event planned Friday, June 8 through Saturday, June 9, at West Campus.

The overnight fundraiser for the American Cancer Society gives teams of 10 to 12 friends a chance to leisurely walk around the outdoor track to raise money from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m.

Yes, I said walk. This is not a race; it’s a family friendly event that mixes a little outdoor exercise with the opportunity to applaud cancer survivors and raise funds for a cure.

Why is this an all-night event? Because cancer never sleeps.
