A fire at Wal-Mart, 850 S. Barrington Road, in Streamwood, is out and no one was injured, according to a police official. The fire, which stemmed from renovations being made to the roof, was extinguished by noon, and people were being allowed back into the building.
Construction worker Jake Temple, who was working on the roof, said he was on the opposite end of the building when a coworker told him there was a fire and they were evacuating.
Temple said his crew's foreman believed the fire started when a demolition worker was cutting through some material and a pile of debris caught fire.
Patrick Kubina, manager of Giordano's Pizza across from the scene, said he saw lots of smoke but no flames being emitted from behind the Wal-Mart around 11 a.m.
"There were a coupleof guys on the roof and they had to get a crain to come get them down," Kubina said.
Schaumburg resident John O'Hare said he saw clouds of black smoke rising from the Wal-Mart from his home Friday morning and walked over to view the scene.
"I knew something was burning, but I didn't know what," he said.
Some smoke remained in the area, as fire crews were clearing the scene about noon.
