With gas currently at more than $4 a gallon, School District U-46’s transportation is taking a hit, Chief Operations Officer Jeff King said at Tuesday night’s board of education meeting.
According to King, rising fuel costs are leading the transportation fund to exceed costs by $150,000.
King said by the end of the year, that number has the potential to rise to almost $400,000 more than last year’s costs.
King said the transportation fund has become one of U-46’s “biggest challenges moving forward” because the state already owes the district $4 million. The state is also projected to cut down payments to the fund this year.
Overall, the district is still waiting on $19.4 million from the state, according to district financial analyst Dale Burnridge.
While the district had not received any categorical payments from the state in February, it did receive $1.6 million in Cook County property taxes.
