Just a few years ago, Sonic was only attainable to those living in the Chicago suburbs through an abundance of commercials with visions of Coney dogs, tater tots and their signature limeades.
On Dec. 27, another Sonic Drive-in location opened in Streamwood, marking the sixth restaurant in its franchise and the 11th in the Chicagoland area, according to Sonic spokeswoman Sarah Ferguson.
Bartlett was the second location eyed by the franchise, and in February 2009 a Sonic opened near Stearns Road and Route 59.
With the Streamwood location less than 8 miles from Bartlett, Assistant General Manager Megan Ludeman said because they are in the same franchise, the locations won’t compete against each other for business.
“It really hasn’t affected us at all,” she said. “We help each other, out so it doesn’t bother us too much.”
Sonic became famous for its unique drive-in ordering style, though most have drive thru, as well as car hops that deliver food on roller skates.
With more than 168,000 drink combinations and unique menu items, such as Coney dogs and burgers served on Texas toast, franchise owner and operator Seth Wolken said those factors have allowed Sonic to differentiate itself from other fast food competitors, which piques interest in helping maintain its popularity.
“People want to try something different and we offer that,” he said. “I think it’s exciting to deliver a concept that’s new and to have people learn about our brand.”
Other area Sonic locations include Aurora, Palatine, Algonquin and Franklin Park.
