Peace Corps member Megan Butler, originally from Lombard, has been awarded a grant to support her work in El Salvador by Kids to Kids, a youth-led program of World Connect.

Butler is co-sponsoring the eastern El Salvador Girls Leading Our World Camp project in partnership with a community leader working on behalf of children. The funding from the grant will go toward the camp.

“The camp allows young Salvadoran women to gain confidence and become empowered to fulfill their true potential and be community leaders,” said Caitlin Abber, representative for World Connect.

The camp encourages young women to participate in activities about feminine health, self-defense, AIDS and HIV, healthy relationships and gender equality. They will meet professional female role models in hopes of getting them thinking about their futures.

“The way the grant review process works is that the Kids to Kids Youth Advisory Board reviews the proposed projects, and Kids to Kids members across the nation vote online,” said Abber. “GLOW Camp appealed to Kids to Kids members due to the educational, inspirational and fun nature of the program.”

Butler still is in El Salvador and could not be reached for comment.
Kids to Kids was founded by four children from Massachusetts in 2005 who wanted to make a difference in the lives of young people worldwide through arts, sports education and environmental projects.

Kids to Kids has awarded more than 300 micro-grants since 2008, worth a total of more than $100,000.
