ADDISON, IL -

In this era of ultra-commercialized chain restaurants and sports bars, we seem to have lost the art of classic cocktailing.  When was the last time you enjoyed the libation of your choice in a comfortable lounge setting free from jalapeno poppers and beer-fueled arguments over a pool table?

Patrons of the Addison Pub, 190 N. Swift Road, cherish the comfortable lounge experience offered by this little gem of a place.

The pub originally opened in 1986 as the Phantacee Lounge (note the intriguing spelling.) Scott and Kathy Krause bought the place in 1997, by then known as the Addison Pub, and ten years later this husband and wife pub proprietor team continues to maintain a classically cozy place that draws a steady stream of loyalists.

“We pay attention to our customers,” said Kathy Krause. “We welcome them here like we’re welcoming them into our home.”

Being mindful of how the bar’s dynamic is affected by the customers present is a key element in the Addison Pub’s success.  While its physical environment is great—a triangular bar surrounded by a smattering of tables and dimly lit but not somber—what good would it be if the crowd were not maintained properly?  All it takes is one overserved goon to unravel a perfectly comfortable atmosphere.

“We keep an eye on the crowd to make sure that everyone is comfortable and no one’s space is invaded,” explained Scott Krause.

This approach has clearly been effective.  The pub has a great group of loyal regulars from a variety of nearby businesses such as UPS and DeVry Institute of Technology.

“We have had some customers whose life paths have taken them out of the area, but then they’ll come back to visit us and let us know how they’re doing,” said Scott Krause. “This happens quite a bit, at least once a week.”

In addition to the pub’s fine atmosphere, there is also a wide selection of fine beverages available including everything from beer to mixed cocktails. And there is the added benefit of being served by seasoned mixologists.

Scott Krause has a solid background in the food and beverage industry, having served as the beverage manager at the Twin Door Supper Club in Geneva and in multiple capacities at the Chicago Golf Club.  His bartending knowledge is extensive and he sometimes expands the beverage horizons of his customers by introducing them to unique concoctions he has discovered.

After 24 years of marriage and 10 years of “Addison Pubbing” together, Kathy Krause has assimilated her husband’s knowledge and is an excellent bartender in her own right. The Krauses are the owners, bartenders, and the only employees of the Addison Pub, not counting the occasional bartending stint of their capable daughter, Holly.

“Different challenges we manage to face okay by working together as a team,” said Scott Krause.  “We complement each other because we each have different strengths and weaknesses.”

According to Addison resident and loyal Addison Pub patron Mike Tynus, the knowledge that Scott and/or Kathy will be manning the bar every time he walks in is a huge plus.

“Sometimes you walk into a place and the one bartender you like isn’t there that day,” he said. “But here with Scott and Kathy, you always have a bartender you like.”
Keeping true to its loungey nature, the pub does not serve meals.  However, the self-serve popcorn station contains the most perfect, fluffy popcorn you could hope for, and Scott Krause supplements that with periodic special treats for which there is never a charge.

A large freezer stands ready with its supply of frozen pizzas for toasting to crispy perfection as needed. Every Friday night features an alternating lineup of tasty mini meatballs and sausage.  Scrumptious homemade corned beef and cabbage is served up on St. Patrick’s Day along with bakery-fresh rye bread. And I must mention the king of the Scott Krause treats, which is his chili. Lovingly made from scratch with ground chuck, vidalia onions, stewed tomatoes, celery, and green, jalapeno, and habanero peppers, it is nothing short of succulent. The chili makes an appearance on certain occasions such as a Chicago Bears Monday night football game.

The Krauses are rightfully proud of their place and they enjoy doing business in Addison.

“Addison treats us very well,” said Kathy Krause.

Ah, the feeling is mutual--trust us Addison Pub patrons.
