DOWNERS GROVE – December is almost here and with it comes the busy holiday season complete with shopping, parties and winter break. The Downers Grove Park District offers a respite from the hectic season with numerous activities for children and families – many with a holiday theme. WHAT: Holiday Tea

WHEN: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Dec. 4

WHERE: Downers Grove Museum, 831 Maple Ave.

COST AND INFO: For ages 18 and up; residents $15, nonresidents $20

ABOUT: Enjoy an afternoon tea in the sitting room of the Blodgett House. Learn about early holiday traditions during a private tour of the holiday-decorated Victorian home. Tea and light snacks will be served after the tour. Advance registration is required.

WHAT: Merry & Bright: A Victorian Christmas

WHEN: 3 to 7 p.m. Dec. 14

WHERE: Downers Grove Museum, 831 Maple Ave.

COST: Free

ABOUT: Learn about Victorian Christmas traditions, tour the holiday-decorated Blodgett House and listen to Victorian-era carolers at the free family event. Stroll the park while warming up around a campfire and visit with Santa. Holiday snacks will be available for purchase. Visitors are encouraged to bring items to donate under the Giving Tree from Dec. 7 to 21. Donations will benefit DuPage Pads and the West Suburban Humane Society. Groups and local businesses are invited to decorate a holiday tree to be judged by Facebook followers. Trees will be on display during Merry & Bright, when the winner of each division will be announced. For information, visit www.dgparks.org.

WHAT: Amazing Gingerbread Houses

WHEN: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19

WHERE: Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave.

COST AND INFO: For ages 3 to 12 with parent. Resident families $36, nonresident families $56.

ABOUT: Enjoy a family night of designing and decorating a gingerbread house for the holidays. The park district will provide everything you need along with a holiday snack and beverage. One gingerbread house per family. Registration is required.

WHAT: The LINK Day Off Adventures

WHEN: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 23, 26, 27 and 30

WHERE: Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave.

COST: Residents $45, nonresidents $65

ABOUT: Open to all kindergarten to sixth-grade students from all school districts. LINK Day Off Adventures offer field trips, special events or themed days and will be filled with sports, arts and crafts and group games. Registrations are based on program space, staffing and enrollment. Children will need to bring a sack lunch, drink, afternoon snack and a backpack to all LINK Day Off Adventures. WHAT: Winter Break Nature Camp

WHEN: 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 26 to 27, Dec. 30 to 31, Jan. 2 to 3

WHERE: Lyman Woods, 901 31st St.

COST AND INFO: For ages: 4 to 9, $35

ABOUT: Come to Lyman Woods and explore winter wildlife, winter weather and do some winter tracking. Each day of camp includes crafts, games and outdoor adventures. Dress to go outside and get messy. In case of severe weather, the program may take place indoors. Choose from morning or afternoon options, or register for both to make it a full day of camp. Bring a lunch if staying for the full day. Each day includes a mid-camp snack at both sessions. Registration is required.

WHAT: Museum Half-Day Winter Camp

WHEN: 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 23, 26, 27, 30 and Jan. 3, 4

WHERE: Downers Grove Museum, 835 Maple Ave.

COST AND INFO: For ages: 5 to 8. Residents $16, nonresidents $24

ABOUT: Spend winter break exploring the expansive collection at the Downers Grove Museum. Get hands-on experience handling artifacts and discover how museums store and exhibit artifacts to preserve the history of Downers Grove. Each day will cover a new museum topic. Sign up for one or all days of camp. Registration is required.

WHAT: Dance & Theater Winter Break Camp

WHEN: 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 26, 27 and Jan. 2, 3

WHERE: Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave.

COST AND INFO: For ages: 5 to 10. Residents $60, nonresidents $90

ABOUT: In the first half of the day, spend your time dancing to the beat of various styles of music while you learn basic routines in ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop. In the second half of the day, take to the stage with some improv and theater games, creating characters and scenes. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and bring a water bottle and a lunch. Sign up for one day or multiple days. Before- and after-care hours are available for winter break through the LINK. Registration is required.

WHAT: New Year's Eve Countdown to Noon

WHEN: 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 31

WHERE: Downers Grove Recreation Center, 4500 Belmont Road

COST: By Dec. 26: Residents $15, nonresidents $23. After Dec. 26: Residents $20, nonresidents $30

ABOUT: Ring in the new year at noon with party favors, DJ Coach Josh, a photo booth, face painting, snacks and a balloon drop. Parents must stay and supervise their children. Children under 2 may attend free of charge (must sign waiver at check-in). Space is limited. Registration is required.
