Glenbard Parent Series to host two events Oct. 16

The Glenbard Parent Series: (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families will host two events Oct. 16: a FAFSA completion workshop at 6:30 p.m. and Motivate and Achieve: Nurturing a Growth Mindset for Resilient Youth at 7 p.m.

Both events will be at Glenbard West High School, 670 Crescent Blvd., Glen Ellyn. 

The FAFSA completion workshop for seniors and their families will be in Glenbard West’s computer lab.

Jackie Rhew will present Motivate and Achieve: Nurturing a Growth Mindset for Resilient Youth at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.

Rhew, co-founder of the Center for Emotional Wellness of the Northwest Suburbs, will discuss interventions designed to assist children in healthy goal setting, being actively engaged in school and managing anxiety. Attendees will learn strategies to assist young people with positive coping responses and proactive solutions. Rhew will discuss how to engage teens in effective communication with language that promotes self-advocacy and independence. 

Rhew provides training on topics including self-injury and bullying in schools. She is the co-author with Robin Choquette of “The Successful Parenting Workbook: Create Your Custom Plan for Raising Independent Children into Adulthood.”

Continuing professional development units are available for Rhew’s workshop. 

The FAFSA completion workshop begins at 6:30 p.m. in the computer lab. Participants will receive assistance from financial aid specialists from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid form online.

Attendees should bring the following necessary documentation: 2018 Federal tax returns, 2018 W2 forms and a record of untaxed income and investment/asset /business value. Assistance will be available in Spanish and English.
