Sen. Elizabeth Warren endorses Newman for Congress

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a 2020 presidential candidate, has announced her endorsement of Marie Newman, who is challenging incumbent U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski in the 3rd Congressional District.

In a campaign email to Newman’s supporters, Warren explained her support for the La Grange businesswoman, while taking aim at Lipinski’s more conservative views on abortion rights.

“Voters in the Illinois Third District have a stark choice on their hands next March,” Warren wrote. “Right now, while women’s rights are under constant attack from Republican lawmakers across America, this district is represented by someone who votes against women’s access to reproductive health care.”

While Newman has criticized Lipinski for his anti-abortion stance, she’s also said that issue became too much of a focus in their 2018 contest, which she narrowly lost. Newman said she’s now focusing more on issues like health care, social security and immigration.

Warren is the latest of a number of high-profile Democrats who have backed Newman. Newman already earned endorsements from U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee.

In a statement, Lipinski responded to news of the endorsement, saying it “lamentably proves the point of Washington pundits that Warren has moved from independent fact-based thinking to ideological orthodoxy.” He also attacked Newman as an “ideologue” who “parroted the talking points of radicals.”
