Ben’s Memorial Mile steps off June 15 at Downers Grove North

DOWNERS GROVE – The fourth annual Ben’s Memorial Mile will take place June 15 at Downers Grove North High School’s outdoor track.

The event will be from 5 to 9 p.m. The fee is $25 for unlimited runs/walks. Same-day registration is available for $30. Spectators are free.

The event features running, walking, music and games in honor of Ben Silver, the Downers Grove North champion runner, singer, songwriter and poet who died July 2, 2015, at the age of 22 after battling mental illness for three years.

Ben’s Memorial Mile features mile runs, Ben’s costume mile, a relay race, kids’ half mile, a little kids’ 100-meter dash, a “Benepede” (where runners run attached to each other) and a wheezer-geezer for runners 50 and older.

The event also will feature music, mental-health booths, food, raffles, a bags contest and more. There’s a mile walk under the lights at the end of the night in honor of Ben and everyone who has suffered from mental illness.

There will be an after-party from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Cadence, 5101 Mochel Drive, Downers Grove.

A Ben’s Memorial Mile party will be from 9 p.m. to midnight June 14 at Pierce Tavern, 5135 Main St., Downers Grove.
