LA GRANGE – Laura Magruder recently was named the new principal of La Grange Highlands Elementary School. Her tenure at Highlands will begin July 1.
Magruder comes to Highlands from Elmwood Park CUSD 401, where she has worked since 2013. For the past three years, she has served as the principal of John Mills Elementary School.
Before being the principal of John Mills Elementary School, Magruder served there as the assistant principal for three years. In addition, she has been an elementary dean of students and has taught at the elementary level, working as a Response to Intervention interventionist, technology integration specialist and an elementary teacher at various grade levels.
Magruder earned a master’s of education degree in elementary education teaching and learning from DePaul University and an education specialist degree in administrative leadership and policy studies from the University of Colorado, Denver.
In her free time, Magruder enjoys spending time with family, cooking, reading, running and sailing.
Patricia Viniard, who will retire as superintendent of District 106 at the end of June, and Amy Warke, incoming superintendent, co-facilitated the hiring process. The process included multiple interview rounds and activities.
The interview teams included representatives from administration, faculty, support staff, office staff, the Board of Education and students.
Viniard and Warke expressed their thanks to those individuals for their active participation and insightful feedback.
“While there were a number of excellent candidates for this important position, Laura Magruder stood out as someone who will be an excellent fit for Highlands,” Viniard said. “I am certain her leadership will further the excellence already established at La Grange Highlands Elementary School.”
“Laura is a student-centered leader who believes in listening and learning from students, staff and the community,” Warke said. “She will be a wonderful addition to our team.”
“I’m so honored to be chosen as the new principal and instructional leader of La Grange Highlands Elementary School,” Magruder said. “I am very impressed with the strong community and culture of the Highlands. I identify with the district’s dedication to educating the whole child and the focus on growth for all students. I look forward to leading, learning from and growing with our students, staff and families.”
Magruder will replace Brian Graber, who is resigning to accept the position of assistant superintendent of human resources in DuPage County School District 45.
