Bond set at $300k for son charged with killing his mother in Campton Hills

21-year-old beat Campton Hills woman with bat, charges state

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Bond was set at $300,000 Tuesday for Thomas Summerwill, 21, of Campton Hills charged with two counts of second degree murder in the grisly baseball bat beating death of his mother, Mary Summerwill, 53.

Summerwill’s attorney, Liam Dixon, said his client would be posting $30,000 bail or 10 percent of the bond that was set. Kane County Circuit Court Judge Keith Johnson set Summerwill’s next court date for May 23.

According to the Campton Hillls police department, on the morning of March 24, both local and sheriff's police officers responded to a 911 call at Summerwill's home on the 40W600 block of Willowbrook Drive and found Mary Summerwill, who was subsequently transported to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva. Summerwill later died of her injuries.

The coroners office later determined she most likely died of injuries from a baseball bat attack. Summerwill died of cranial injuries and had no other injuries, the coroner stated.

Thomas Summerwill was charged May 13. Johnson agreed with Assistant State’s Attorney David Belshan on that amount because Summerwill cooperated with investigators, has no criminal record and the charges are probationable. No motive has been stated at this time.

Summerwill and her husband of more than 26 years, Jeffrey Summerwill, have two sons, Thomas, and Ryan, 19.
