Trio of challengers win in District 41

GLEN ELLYN - It was a big night for a trio of challengers in the hotly contested school board race in Glen Ellyn School District 41.

The newcomers-Jessica Buttimer, Julie Hill and Edward Estes-took an early lead and never looked back in the five-way race for three seats on the board.

With 100 percent of the votes tallied, Buttimer collected 2,581 votes followed by Estes with 2,557 and Hill, who garnered 2,515, according to unofficial results.

The trio enjoyed the support of the teachers union and supported a plan to introduce all-day kindergarten in the district.

Incumbents Stephanie Clark and Kurt Buchholz collected 1,417 and 1,272 votes, respectively, in a race that was partly defined by the board's decision not to renew the contract of a Superintendent Paul Gordon.

Clark, the board president, and Buchholz, the vice president, cast two of the four votes to let Gordon's contract expire at the end of June. The decision was met with fierce opposition from teachers and parents.

Gordon recently was named superintendent of a school district in Washington, and the District 41 board has appointed his replacement.
