Westmont to kick off new retail development with demolition ceremony

Residents can swing a sledgehammer at old building Dec. 15

WESTMONT - Westmont is offering residents a hands-on opportunity to participate in the new development at 63rd Street and Cass Avenue.

“We’ve decided to get creative with the kickoff of this project with a demolition ceremony,” said Westmont Mayor Ronald Gunter said in a village news release. “We’re inviting the entire community to come out, grab a sledgehammer and help us start this project by taking a swing at the old building. Westmont is more than ready for this change.”

The demolition ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Dec. 15 at 10 W. 63rd Street, formerly the Westbrook Market location.

Bradford Real Estate, Kensington Development Partners and investment partner IM Properties recently completed the acquisition of the Westmont Village Centre property, which is now ready for a long-awaited redevelopment, the release said.

“We are planning to invite all of our elected officials and our South Westmont Business District partners to grab a sledgehammer and participate,” Westmont Economic Development Director Larry Forssberg said in the release. “It will be a symbolic moment as we finally move forward with a business development project that will serve as the commercial core of 63rd and Cass for decades to come.”

Some of the proposed businesses that are scheduled to be part of the development include a multi-screen movie theater, several restaurants and an LA Fitness Signature Club facility. Businesses located on the corner of Cass Avenue and 63rd Street, including Walgreens, Burger King and Italiamo, will be unaffected.

“The Bradford and Kensington Teams along with the Village of Westmont, have worked hard for the past three years to make this project a reality” noted John Schoditsch, Principal of Kensington Development Partners.

The demolition process is expected to continue through the spring of 2019. A groundbreaking ceremony for project construction will begin after that.
