Former St. Charles East High School sentenced after pleading guilty to child pornography possession

ELMHURST – A former St. Charles East High School teacher was sentenced Nov. 16 to 30 months sex offender probation and four days in DuPage County jail after he plead guilty Aug. 6 to one count of child pornography possession, a class 3 felony.

Gregory Burgener, 63, of the 400 block of West Fremont Avenue, Elmhurst, had been charged May 16, 2017 with two counts of possession of child pornography, a Class 1 felony, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office around the time of Burgener's arrest.

Following an investigation led by the Elmhurst Police Department, Burgener was taken into custody the morning of May 16, 2017, the release stated.

Burgener's bond had been set at $150,000 with 10 percent to apply, according to the release.

DuPage County State's Attorney's Office Communications Manager Paul Darrah said Nov. 21 that Burgener has already served the time in jail because he had spent two days in custody on May 16 and 17, 2017, with good behavior and Illinois' day-for-day credit statute applied in his case.

Burgener posted $15,000, the 10 percent to apply, on May 17, 2017, Darrah said.

Burgener is not to have any contact with minors and he will also have to pay $2,527 for court fees and fines, Darrah said.

Restrictions for sex offender probation are determined by the probation department of the DuPage County Sheriff's Office, he said.

An English teacher, Burgener had been employed by St. Charles School District 303 since 1995, former director of school and community relations for the district Jim Blaney said at the time.
