Pillars Community Health will receive a $243,200 grant through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help expand access to substance use treatment and mental health services.

The grant also will advance the Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment program, U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, announced in a news release.

The program is a coordinated, integrated approach to medical and behavioral health treatment, the release stated. Patients who come to Pillars Community Health for medical or dental services also can receive screenings and brief interventions related to mental health and substance use.

Since May 2017, Pillars Community Health has been one of 15 federally qualified health centers participating in the Facilitating Change for Excellence in SBIRT Learning Collaborative, an initiative of the National Council for Behavioral Health, according to the release.

The new funding will help Pillars Community Health pay for additional staff and screening tools to identify substance use disorders, such as hazardous drinking, alcohol abuse or dependence, and non-medical use of prescribed and over-the-counter drugs, and quickly connect individuals with needed education and treatment, the release stated.

Pillars Community Health is a nonprofit provider of health and social services serving Berwyn, Broadview, Brookfield, Burr Ridge, Cicero, Clarendon Hills, Countryside, Darien, Hinsdale, Hodgkins, Indian Head Park, La Grange, La Grange Park, Lyons, McCook, North Riverside, Oak Brook, Riverside, Stickney, Westchester, Western Springs, Westmont, Willow Springs and Willowbrook, among other towns.

The organization is the result of a merger in January 2018 between Pillars and Community Nurse Health Center.
