Questioning D-99 superintendent's pay raise

District 99 Superintendent Hank Thiele will earn $230,000 per year. Now I know why he has such a big smile. I would like to thank board members Rick Pavinato and Dan Nicholas for voting against the pay raise. When will this mind-boggling fiscal irresponsibility end? Board President Nancy Kupka says, Everyone else is jumping off the cliff, why not us. I am on Social Security, it will take me 10 years to earn Hanks' new yearly salary. I will be thinking of his big smile every time I contribute to his pay with my taxes. I am glad Hank is only doing a "good" job. I would hate to see his raise if he were an "excellent" superintendent.

Berwyn water woes

Well, the city of Berwyn is facing another integrity issue. On the front page of the Berwyn [Suburban] Life on [Aug. 15], clearly states that the testing finds high lead levels in Berwyn. And yet, in June of 2018, we received a consumer report saying that our water levels were meeting the standards, and there was no violations. So who is not telling the truth, and why do the residents of Berwyn have to suffer?

Keep outside Realtors out of Lemont

This message is for the village of Lemont's [trustees] and mayor. A continuing problem is occurring in our community, with outside Realtors bombarding our community for their personal gain. They're using the mail from outside the community to try and get business that is not particularly wanted in our community. They bring in a situation where we've had more rental properties occur in the community since this has been happening, and also a lot of situations where the Realtors come in, buy property and then flip it with outside Realtors that are looking to get a situation where the property then turns over to another client. This needs to be looked into by the village [trustees] and ask the village administrator if they know of any action permits or any type of codes that can be used that have been used in other communities to lessen this type of situation. This situation is growing, and it's very, very threatening to the community and its people that have always looked at the community as a quiet community, not a community that needs to be exploited by outside Realtors.

Mueller is 'good man'

Robert S. Mueller, head of the Special Counsel investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections, is a life-long conservative Republican. He served as a Marine Corps officer during the Vietnam War. He received the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" for heroism, while rescuing a wounded Marine during enemy fire. He was wounded in April 1969. He received the Purple Heart Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals as well as numerous other service awards. He is a true patriot and has conducted this investigation with the utmost integrity. He has now indicted or secured guilty pleas from 32 people and three Russian companies. To see President [Donald] Trump, Rudy Guliani, Sean Hannity and other Trumpites trash this good man makes me wonder if the Republicans, like Faust, have sold their souls to the devil.
