ELMHURST – Twenty-three preschoolers celebrated their reading accomplishments with their families at the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten graduation ceremony Aug. 18 at the Elmhurst Public Library.
Josephine Roubitcheck, a seventh-grader at Sandburg Middle School, spoke to the young, voracious readers at the ceremony about her love of reading to encourage them to keep reading, Preschool Services Librarian Sarah Burnside said in an email.
She read "Big Sister Dora," a "Dora the Explorer" book, to them at the event, which included one of her younger brothers, Noah, Burnside said.
The children also participated in activities that helped them understand the nature of their accomplishment such as placing 1,000 stickers on a caterpillar cutout at the event, playing with 1,000 blocks and seeing what 1,000 looks like in the form of marshmallows, coins, Tootsie Rolls, beads and tissues.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, which is in its second year, is ongoing and growing, Burnside said.
