DOWNERS GROVE – The Landmarked House of the Month at 1514 Thornwood Drive in Downers Grove is owned by Juanita Shaw and her daughter Pamela.
This bungalow was built circa 1927, and it has had only two owners in 91 years. The pride in ownership is evident as it has been a well-loved home with excellent maintenance all these years.
This house was built by Gordon and Dorothy Bunge. Gordon was an attorney who worked with his uncle Gustav H. Bunge, who also was an attorney and developer of the Tivoli Theatre and Hotel. By 1930, there were three more Bunge families living on Thornwood Drive.
The house represents the distinguishing characteristics of the Craftsman-style bungalow. The Craftsman style was derived from the Arts and Crafts movement, which valued handcraftsmanship, natural materials and simplicity of design.
Many of the original architectural features of this home are still present, including the original interior and exterior doors, hardware, windows, dark tapestry brick and even the original address plaque. In the 1960s, the Shaws removed the original front porch, but recently, this porch has been replaced to replicate the original porch of the home.
Those who are considering landmarking their homes should contact the Downers Grove Community Development Department at 630-434-5515, visit Friends of the Edwards House on Facebook or stop by the group's booth Aug. 25 at the Downtown Downers Grove Market.
