CICERO – Two Morton East High School seniors were the recipients of the inaugural Scott S. Goodman Scholarship, established by Morton East class of 1986 valedictorian Scott Goodman.

The winners were Jaqueline Velasquez and Ivan Fuentes, who received plaques at the Cicero school's Senior Awards Night in May.

Of the 18 students who applied for the scholarship, Velasquez and Fuentes were selected based on their academic performance, contributions to the school, participation in extracurricular activities, financial need, community service and overall citizenship, as well as their essays and one-on-one interviews, according to a news release.

Goodman originally had planned to offer one $1,000 scholarship, but because he felt both students were deserving, they will each receive a $1,000 scholarship, the release stated.

In the fall, Velasquez will attend the University of Chicago’s honors program and Fuentes will attend Arizona State University, according to the release.

Goodman’s scholarship makes history as the first alumni-sponsored scholarship at Morton, the release stated.
