BERWYN – Two juveniles have been charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking and unlawful use of a weapon after they allegedly committed a vehicular hijacking June 25 and attempted another June 26, according to a post on the Berwyn Police Department's Facebook page.
At 4:41 p.m. June 25, Berwyn police responded to the report of an aggravated vehicular hijacking near Home Avenue and 13th Street in Berwyn, in which the victim was approached by three juvenile males, one armed with a handgun, who allegedly displayed the weapon and demanded the victim exit his vehicle, police said in the post. The offenders allegedly then entered the vehicle and fled the scene.
At 4:18 p.m. June 26, officers near Wenonah Avenue and 13th Street reported hearing shots fired. Two male juveniles were detained while fleeing from the scene, and a discarded firearm was recovered from the area, the post stated.
As of the June 27 post, it appeared the suspects were attempting to commit another vehicular hijacking when an unidentified person – possibly the intended victim – shot several times in the air as they approached, according to the post.
The two detained juveniles were taken into custody, and one of them also was charged with an additional aggravated vehicular hijacking in Oak Park, police said. The third suspect has been identified, but his arrest was pending as of the early afternoon of June 27.
