DOWNERS GROVE – The bungalow at 1323 Maple Ave. in Downers Grove, owned by David and Carol Miller, is Friends of the Edwards House's Landmarked House of the Month for June.
This brick bungalow was constructed circa 1924. The bungalow architectural style was commonly built from 1890 to 1930 all over Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. However, this home is a custom-designed bungalow with many details that make it special.
This style presented a growing middle-class population with a style that was attractive and included many unique design elements and handcrafted decorative arts. At first glance, it might appear as a Chicago bungalow; however, it is a mix of Prairie style and Arts and Crafts, with beautiful dark brick and features such as a pantry, leaded and stained glass windows, and a fireplace. The interior includes the original mahogany doors, floors and trim work.
The Millers have chosen to landmark the original two-car garage, which was built with all face brick to match the home. The 1323 Maple Ave. home is unique to Downers Grove and has been added to the list of local historic landmarks to ensure it is acknowledged as such and preserved in the future.
