Niego, a 6-foot-2 rising senior guard, is the fourth family member to play for the Lyons Township basketball program. Oldest brother Harrison was an All-State player, walked on at Indiana and went on to Hillsdale College. Connor is at Holy Cross, and cousin Noah is at Loras.
Nolan Niego's younger brother, Grant, is a junior at LT – and the line might not end there.
"You know what, we have some family in the city that's coming here out of Chicago," Niego said. "It's fun playing with family, good times."
Niego is intent on carrying on that tradition.
He's one of four Lions who started at one point last season who will be returning come this winter. Tyrese Shines, Josh Barry and Matt Sloyan are the others.
LT was in action this weekend at the 14th Annual Hoop Mountain Shootout at Batavia. The Lions, despite missing Shines (tweaked knee) and Barry (broken nose) won their first game, against St. Charles East.
"I feel it went well," Niego said. "As a team we are coming together, we are talkative, everybody likes each other, we're moving the ball, hitting shots and jelling together as a team."
