Summer activities make their return to Downers Grove

DOWNERS GROVE – With Memorial Day just around the corner, summer is nearly here. The unpredictable weather during May may make that statement difficult to believe, but the Downers Grove events calendar indicates that annual warm-weather activities are back.

Take, for example, the 26th annual Summer Nights Classic Car Show. It kicks off May 25 and continues from 6 to 9 p.m. every Friday through Aug. 31.

An array of classic cars will line the streets of downtown Downers Grove while hundreds of families enjoy the display.

Classic cars can be found on Main Street from Maple Avenue to Franklin Street and featured cars will park on Curtiss Street. Live entertainment will be performed at the Main Street train station from 7 to 9 p.m.

Visitors can park in surrounding parking lots or in the parking deck at 945 Curtiss St., which is free after 3 p.m. on Fridays.

Information on the weekly featured cars and entertainment can be found at downtowndg.org.

While Friday nights are reserved for cars, Tuesday evenings are set aside for live music.

The Downers Grove Park District will once again host its free Summer Concert Series, featuring 13 performances from May 29 through Aug. 21 at the Veterans Memorial Pavilion at Fishel Park, which is on Grove Street just west of Main Street.

Concerts begin at 7 p.m., and food, beer and wine sales begin at 6 p.m. More food trucks will be on hand this year including Fancy Fajita, Robinson’s Ribs, Wells Street Popcorn and Every Day’s a Sundae.

A variety of music will be performed during the series, including rock, oldies and country, as well as John Mellencamp and The Four Seasons tribute bands.

The village's big summer celebration, Rotary GroveFest, will be June 21 through 24 in downtown Downers Grove.

Fifteen bands will take the stage adjacent to the Downers Grove Public Library during the three-day event, which also features a carnival midway, craft beer fest, food and business expo, and a festival of cars.

For information on the celebration, visit rotarygrovefest.com.

The Downtown Downers Grove Market has made its return to the Burlington Avenue parking lot from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays through Oct. 20.

A wide selection of fresh produce is available at the market, along with a variety of other foods, flowers, crafts and art work.

The Downers Grove Park District also offers a plethora of activities throughout the summer, including numerous camps for children of all ages. Registration is now open. For information on the camps and other summer activities, visit dgparks.org or call 630-960-7500.

The Downers Grove Public Library also offers a variety of summer programming. The summer reading program runs through Aug. 5. Information can be found at dglibrary.org.
