Downers Grove South’s 3,200 relay breaks 30-year-old school record

Downers Grove South’s 3,200-meter relay team of Kelley Hackbarth, Erin Reidy, Gillian Thomas and Becky Versaskas broke a 30-year-old program record May 11 at the Class 3A Plainfield North Sectional.

The Mustangs were clocked in 9:12.83, besting the mark set in 1988. Hackbarth also qualified for state in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.34. Reidy also qualified in the 1,600.

Also qualifying for the Mustangs was sophomore Brenna Cohoon in the 3,200 run with a time of 10:54.34, and senior four-time state qualifier Maddie Manganiello in the long jump with a mark of 17 feet, 7.5 inches.

Hinsdale Central

Hinsdale Central’s Chinazaekper Nwankpa qualified for state in the 100-meter dash and 200 to lead the Red Devils’ state qualifiers at the Plainfield North sectional.

Reilly Revord qualified in the 800 and the 3,200, and the team of Cassidy Winiecke, Nwankpa, Eillie Geier and Kyla Collier did so in the 400 relay.

Also qualifying was the 1,600 relay team of Bella Pisani, Geier, Gillian Filer and Grace McCabe and the 3,200 relay team of McCabe, Mckenna Revord, Reilly Revord and Pisani.

Dior Nicholson qualified for the Red Devils in both the shot put and discus.

BASEBALL

Westmont

Matt O’Leary was 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored and an RBI and Chad Johnson was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored for Westmont (14-16) in a 15-5 win over Chicago F.W. Parker on May 12. O’Leary was 2-for-4 with a triple, run scored and an RBI in a 4-3 loss to Streator on May 10. O’Leary was 3-for-5 with a run scored, Christian Alexander was 2-for-4 with a triple, run scored and an RBI, and Robbie Burns was 3-for-3 with a double and run scored in a 7-5 loss to Earlville/Paw Paw on May 9.

Caden Anderson and Shawn Kwasny scattered seven hits in a 3-0 win over Lisle on May 8.

GIRLS SOCCER

Benet

Eva Frantzen made three saves in goal and Mary Kate Hansen scored on an assist from Erin Flynn for the Redwings (16-3-1) in a 1-0 win over Hinsdale Central on May 10. Carmel beat Benet 2-0 on May 8.
