Not on the 2016 boys cross country state roster, Christensen was an all-state 21st last November when the Trojans captured their first team state championship. On March 5, Lockerby, Ridderhoff, Christensen and Birkmeier ran an indoor school-record 7:55.59 for the 3,200 relay. At indoor conference March 16, Christensen (9:24.60) and Lockerby (1:57.41) won the 3,200 and 800 with then personal-best times.
“Going into the season, I set 9:20 as a goal. Then after conference I said 9:15 so that’s a little bit different now,” Christensen said. “[The 9:03] helps a lot that I can run that, even if I’m not running that in the state series, to know that I’m that fit.”
Downers South junior Jayden Lambert was second in long jump (personal-best 21 feet-9 1/4 inches) and fourth in triple jump (43-1). Sophomore Shawn Lee was third in shot put (53-4). Encouraged by head coach and assistant football coach Dustin Hausherr to join track in 2017, Lambert became the starting varsity quarterback in the fall.
