DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove North High School officials have discredited a rumor of potential violence at the April 20 student walkout commemorating the anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre.

In an April 19 email to students and families, school officials said they were notified by students that "one student started a rumor about potential violence at school tomorrow."

The student who reportedly started the rumor was questioned by the school's deans and resource officer, who determined there was never a credible threat, according to the email.

"The student admitted to starting the rumor, has been removed from school, and will not be returning tomorrow," the email stated.

As a precaution, Downers Grove North asked Downers Grove police to provide extra presence April 20 at the school, according to the email.

Students across the country will participate in the National School Walkout, which is being held on the 19th anniversary of the shooting at Columbine.

Downers Grove North students plan to walk out of school following a second-period pep assembly that ends at 9:50 a.m., according to the DGNWalkout Twitter page.

Students are encouraged to bring signs and posters to carry in a march that will proceed from the school to Fishel Park, where an hour-long rally is scheduled.

The rally is open to the community, and it will include guest speakers. Students plan to participate in community service for the remainder of the day, according to the Twitter post.
