Suburban Life Sound Off: April 2-8

All walkouts treated the same

For those of you who are still criticizing [Community High School] District 99 administrators for making students serve detention for walking out of class March 14, ask yourself this question. Do you want administrators to decide what is and isn't a good reason for staging a walkout? Several years ago, students were planning a walkout over the dress code. The threat of detention and other discipline stifled that plan. I don't think people would be communicating to Sound Off, complaining that students have the right to protest over how long shorts have to be, or how narrow the straps can be on a tank top, and that punishment of any kind was unfair. Part of civil disobedience is the fact that there is punishment for the act of disobedience. The fact that students were protesting a serious issue of the day does not negate the fact that students are not supposed to leave the building during the school day, unless a parent has excused the departure from the building for a legitimate reason.

Statute of limitations needed

If you cheat, steal, assault, even rape, there is a statute of limitations after which the government cannot charge you with a crime. Yet, for children that were brought illegally into this country by their parents, there is no such statute of limitation. These children have lived here basically all their life. They know no other country. For all intents and purposes, they are Americans. Why is there no statute of limitations in their favor? When a corporation commits a crime against the public, they pay a fine. No one goes to jail, no one gets fired, the corporation doesn't lose its business license. Why can't these illegal immigrants, as long as they have no felony record, pay a fine or perform community service and be granted permanent alien resident status? Then get in line for citizenship if they so choose. Walk a mile in their shoes.

Innocent students in line of fire

To the (assumed) teacher willing to be armed: Please address the situation where the bad guy is physically among the innocent students. Will you be held responsible for any innocent students being killed/maimed by your bullets? Or do you get a free pass? You seem to claim that you are sufficiently accurate to be able [to] maim rather than kill. Pretty impressive. But I doubt that all teachers who would be armed could make the same claim. I’ll leave the "our support in our retiring years” for someone else.

Time for gun reform

The Revolutionary War is long past. The Wild West is gone as well. It is time for gun reform and long overdue. Each day reform is delayed, more family and friends will die. The Republicans control the House, the Senate and the White House. And the NRA controls the Republicans. The vast majority of Americans want gun reform. And still the Republicans fail to act and offer feeble excuses. Bring the legislation up for debate, make it meaningful and put it to a vote. If Republicans were serious about addressing this crisis, they could debate and pass meaningful legislation in 90 days. It took them far less time to pass a $1.5 trillion tax cut for corporations and the wealthy that didn't need to be done. People are dying without gun reform. Get it done or get out of the way!
