Tornatore, Gavanes nab Republican nods for DuPage County Board District 1

Incumbent Sam Tornatore will join Dino Gavanes on the general election ballot for DuPage County Board District 1, after the two won the Republican primary March 20.

Tornatore received 45.07 percent of the vote while Gavanes captured about 27.9 percent and Paul A. DeMichele finished third with 27.05 percent, according to unofficial results from the DuPage County Election Commission.

Vote totals were 6,753 for Tornatore, 4,177 for Gavanes and 4,052 for DeMichele, preliminary numbers show.

Tornatore and Gavanes will face Democrats Zahra Suratwala and Ashley J. Selmon in November.

At a League of Women Voters of Elmhurst candidate forum Jan. 21 at Elmhurst City Hall, Tornatore highlighted Fly Quiet, Western Access, stormwater and the heroin epidemic as important issues and projects for the upcoming term, while Gavanes brought up promoting youth engagement in politics, aiding with the opiod addiction epidemic and gaining new businesses, especially ones that create high-paying jobs.

District 1 includes all or parts of Bensenville, Addison, Elmhurst, Wood Dale, Itasca and Roselle.
