Indiana man dies in I-290 crash involving 7 vehicles

2 men cited in crash

ELMHURST – Two men have been issued citations following a crash at 1:58 p.m. March 1 on Interstate 290 that resulted in the death of an Indiana man.

Christopher G. Follett, 37, of Munster, Ind., died in the crash, and Donald E. Hill, 47, of Rhinelander, Wis., and Nicholas R. Russo, 25, of Bartlett, were cited after the crash with failure to reduce speed, according to an Illinois State Police news release. Two drivers also were transported to Elmhurst Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and one driver was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Loyola Hospital, the release stated.

The crash involved seven vehicles that were driving eastbound on I-290 at St. Charles Road when traffic slowed suddenly, according to the release.

Three of the vehicles in the far right lane stopped because of traffic, but Hill's vehicle failed to reduce speed to avoid a collision and struck the rear of Follett's vehicle, a red 2004 Chrysler sedan, the release stated.

Because of the impact, Follett's vehicle was forced into and under the rear of a white 2013 International Truck Tractor semi-trailer, according to the release. The semi-trailer then struck the rear of an orange 2009 Peterbilt Truck Tractor semi-trailer. The first semi-trailer also veered left into the middle lane and struck a gold 2016 Subaru SUV, the release stated.

The gold SUV then struck a black 2016 Ford SUV, and the black SUV struck the left concrete barrier, according to the release. Russo, driving a white 2018 Toyota van, failed to reduce speed to avoid a collision and struck the rear of the gold SUV, according to the release.

All eastbound lanes of I-290 at St. Charles Road were shut down to remove debris until 2:50 a.m. March 2, the release stated.
