The Vikings placed fourth in 2009 and 2014 and won the 2017 state title – beating Edwardsville 41-40 in the final.
Maine West, a mainstay at state in the 1980s under the late coach Derril Kipp, is making its first appearance since it took second in 1993.
Outlook: Anybody's guess who emerges in a powerhouse Final Four. And, in both games, there is recent history.
Edwardsville beat Montini 37-35 in last year's Class 4A semifinal. Six of Montini's top players are back from that game, and haven't forgotten.
Montini, unbeaten against Illinois opponents this year, has size few teams can match. Aaliyah Patty, a 6-foot-3 Ohio State recruit, averages 14.6 points and 6-5 Wake Forest recruit Lindsey Jarosinski averages 10.9.
The heart and soul of the team, though, could be junior guard Sam Mitchell (10.2 ppg).
No. 1-ranked Edwardsville survived an overtime sectional final with Rock Island to get here.
The Tigers are led by 6-foot senior guard Kate Martin, an Iowa recruit that averages 16.3 points. Another senior guard, Rachel Pranger, averages 12.5.
