Spring activities fill Downers Grove Park District's March calendar

DOWNERS GROVE – The emergence of spring is the focus of several upcoming Downers Grove Park District activities. Here's a look at the district's March schedule.

Family Nature Club

When: 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. March 18

Where: William F. Sherman Jr. Interpretive Center at Lyman Woods, 901 31st St., Downers Grove

Cost: $10 per family per day

About: Build lasting family relationships with nature while honing outdoor skills. Each meet-up will feature a hike or outdoor adventure with activities designed to enhance interaction with the natural world.

Paint & Sip: St. Patrick’s Day

When: 6 to 8 p.m. March 10

Where: Downers Grove Golf Club, 2420 Haddow Ave., Downers Grove

Cost: $35 for residents, $53 for nonresidents

About: Work with acrylics and follow instructions to create a piece of art. Cost includes canvas, use of aprons, brushes, paint and one drink on the house.

“Are We There Yet?” Exhibit

When: noon to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays from March 21 through Aug. 11

Where: Downers Grove Museum, 831 Maple Ave., Downers Grove

Cost: Free

About: Take a trip through the history of vacations, tourism and leisure from the Industrial Revolution to the present day. This exhibit explores how Downers Grove residents and tourists who visited the village planned, enjoyed and remembered their travels.

Flashlight Egg Hunt

When: 7:45 to 8 p.m. March 23

Where: McCollum Park, 6801 Main St., Downers Grove

Cost: $8 for residents, $12 for nonresidents

About: Grab a flashlight and basket and head to the McCollum Park ballfields to search for candy-stuffed eggs under the moonlight. Registration deadline is March 20. No registration will be taken on site.

Spring Break Trips

When: March 26 through April 2

Where: Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave., Downers Grove

Cost: $39 for residents, $59 for nonresidents

About: Each day consists of a variety of games, activities and a field trip. Registration required at least one week in advance.

Spring Break Nature Camp

When: March 27 through 29

Where: William F. Sherman Jr. Interpretive Center at Lyman Woods, 901 31st St., Downers Grove

Cost: $45 for half day, $75 for full day

About: Discover the changes that happen at Lyman Woods during the spring season. Camp includes crafts, games, outdoor adventures and a snack. Dress to get muddy and wet, but in case of inclement weather, the program will be indoors.

Groundbreaking Women Camp

When: 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 26 through 30

Where: Downers Grove Museum, 831 Maple Ave., Downers Grove

Cost: $100 for residents, $150 for nonresidents

About: Spend spring break at the Downers Grove Museum learning about women who have made groundbreaking contributions to politics, art, science and technology throughout history.

Passport to Safety and Wheely Big Trucks

When: 10 a.m. to noon April 7

Where: Lincoln Center, 935 Maple Ave., Downers Grove

Cost: Free

About: Sponsored by the Downers Grove Park District, Fire Department and Police Department, Passport to Safety offers safety tips for all ages. Each child will receive a passport at the beginning of the event and use it to meet local safety personnel and learn important tips to stay safe in and around the home.
