BERWYN – Berwyn has crowned Cigars and Stripes BBQ Lounge its chicken wing champion.
The latest installement of the Berwyn's Best competitions – managed by the Berwyn Development Corp. – focused on finding the city's best wings.
The contest began in mid-January with 10 establishments that had wings on their regular menus. They competed to make it to the top five through a public poll.
The five restaurants that moved on to the second round with the "speciality" wings of their choice included Cigars and Stripes BBQ Lounge, Lavergne's Tavern, Paisans Pizzeria & Bar, Waldo Cooney's Pizza and Wing Boss.
After a second public poll and a blind taste-test by a panel of judges, Cigars and Stripes BBQ Lounge won Berwyn’s Best Chicken Wings Contest with its smoked wings: seven wings hand cut, rubbed and smoked, served with corn salsa, garlic bread and customers' choice of blue cheese or ranch on the side.
As part of the taste-test event hosted by the Berwyn Public Library, the judges compared each serving of wings side by side based on taste, presentation and texture. Judges included Ryan Adriatico, project manager of economic development for the BDC; Tom Benson, owner of World’s Largest Laundromat; Daisy Sanchez, trainer at Women’s Workout World; Angie Pojas, ED director at MacNeal Hospital; Adam Arroyo, manager of Berwyn’s Culver’s; and David Green, head CSI detective at the Berwyn Police Department.
“Berwyn rocks, plain and simple. This town is loaded with hot spots to grab a bite," Cigars and Stripes BBQ Lounge owner Ronnie Lottz said in a BDC news release. "Our wings are just one small slice of what this community has to offer. Just look around you, get out and eat already.”
