DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove resident Kristin McCann shows off one of the many king cakes she baked in preparation for Mardi Gras celebrations.
McCann, a New Orleans native, joined friend Cheryl Bowman of Aurora to create King Cake Girls.
King cakes are a traditional dessert served during the Mardi Gras season. The cakes are topped with purple, green and gold sugar, and a plastic baby, symbolizing the baby Jesus, is hidden inside. Whoever gets the baby in his or her piece is king for the day and has to buy the next cake.
The king cakes are baked at Schmaltz Deli in Naperville.
