Glenbard West's Connor Skryd's road to his first state tournament berth was almost ripped away from him before he got there.
Last season, Skryd suffered a broken leg from football and still came two matches away from reaching state. Four weeks ago, Skryd thought his career was finished from a practice gone seemingly wrong.
A practice partner cradled Skryd, but then rolled over the top of his left labrum – disallowing Skryd to lift his arm more than two inches off his hip. A torn labrum and rotator cuff was feared.
Channeling his "Polish strength", somehow, Skryd could lift his entire arm up the following day.
"The trainers had no idea what was the problem," Skryd said. "So, I've just been wrestling, thankfully, every match [and] praying every night...just [wrestling] through it. I've had a very lucky year. My coaches have really worked with me this year. I've worked my butt off this year."
