Elmhurst College junior Gabby Bandera and sophomore Michael Griffin were selected as student managers for this year's Jazz Festival. They will help the college's staff and aid in managing their peers who are serving as section heads in charge of particular parts of the festival.
Griffin, who is majoring in physics and music, plays bass trombone in the Elmhurst College Jazz Band. He said he is looking forward to hearing the judges play since the band has learned some of the music the judges have selected or composed.
"It's a variety of stuff that you don't often get the chance to play regardless of where you're playing, whether it's in a jazz band or not, and it's really cool to have an opportunity to get to do that with somebody who is actually coming up with these ideas that turn into these pieces," Griffin said.
Bandera, who is majoring in music education and saxophone performance, plays tenor saxophone in the band. She said the best parts of participating in the Jazz Festival are having networking opportunities, hearing different interpretations of music and working with judges.
"It's really inspirational," Bandera said.
She said working as a student manager has helped her become more organized and focused as the team works toward goals together.
"I think it's just a really good learning experience," she said.
