The corporation hosted 23 ribbon-cutting ceremonies in 2017, which included the completion of Phase 2 of the Berwyn Gateway Plaza. Some of the new tenants include City Barbeque and Mattress Firm. Phase 3, located at the northeast corner of Cermak Road and Harlem Avenue, is expected to be completed at the end of 2018. Panera Bread, a Comcast Xfinity store and Legend Tasty House, which serves Thai rolled ice cream, are all expected to open this year.
In addition to the Berwyn Gateway Plaza development, 2017 also saw the opening of 35 Sports Bar & Grill on Cermak Road and Morton Family Dental. Amy Crowther, deputy executive director of the BDC, said all of the new businesses are equally valuable to the city’s economic vitality.
“Every commercial area, which includes Roosevelt Road, Cermak Road, the Depot District and Ogden Avenue, experienced growth, which led to a 5.6 percent increase in total retail sales volume just last year,” she said in an email. “There were 255 building permits pulled in these corridors which resulted in $5 million in total investment.”
